Common questions

How much does pet cremation cost?

It depends mostly on your pet's weight and the type of service. In our Nov 2026 sample of 33 U.S. providers' published price lists, typical ranges (middle 50% of prices) are: communal cremation $85–$210 (no ashes returned), private cremation $235–$400 (ashes returned), aquamation $195–$455. Use our cost calculator for an estimate based on your pet's size, then request local quotes to compare real prices.

What is the difference between private and communal cremation?

Private cremation means your pet is cremated alone and you receive only their ashes back — look for providers who allow witnessing or offer video verification. In communal cremation, several pets are cremated together and ashes are not returned; it is the most affordable option.

Is aquamation legal where I live?

Aquamation (alkaline hydrolysis, or water cremation) is legal for pets in all 50 U.S. states, according to the American Animal Hospital Association. Availability is the real question — providers are concentrated in metro areas, and at the same provider it is often priced the same as flame cremation — in our sample, sometimes less.

Can I bury my pet in my backyard?

Sometimes. Rules are set at state, county, and city level and often restrict depth, distance from water sources, and rented or HOA properties. Many cities prohibit it outright. Check our backyard burial laws guide before you dig — a local ordinance check takes five minutes and can save a fine and a very bad day.

How does FatedPet make money?

Providers pay us for quote referrals and verified listings. Pet owners use every guide, the calculator, and the quote service for free. We never sell your information beyond the up-to-3 providers you explicitly consent to hear from.

FatedPet is an information and referral platform. We do not provide cremation, burial, or veterinary services, and listings do not constitute an endorsement — always verify a provider's licensing and ask for itemized pricing in writing.
